I’m happy to say that version 1 San Antonio’s v1 Vision Zero Crash Map is now complete!
The v1 version has all pedestrian and cyclist crash data from 2013-2022 loaded into the map and has filters for Person Type (Pedestrian or Pedalcyclist), Injury Type, and Year. I’m going to be working on including graphs and charts into future versions of the web application for some additional context and analysis, as well.
There’s also some disclaimers and data validation checks I need to do. For example, the map may not show the actual total amount of injuries/fatalities for a given year. This is likely because the location data (Latitude/Longitude) was either not entered into the crash report or I accidentally may have filtered it out. I also plan to add in demographic data (anonymized) to the analysis – age, gender, race, ethnicity.
Along with implementing some more charts/graphs/data viz and data validation, I’m also going to start looking into see if Texas’ Crash Query site has an API I can utilize. This will help make the data ingestion much more streamlined and automated. I won’t have to split 1 year’s worth of data into separate files and then re-bind them together since I plan to ingest new data either every week, or at least every month, to avoid the site’s 50,000 record limit.
I’m excited about the possibilities and potential that this map has. Even though San Antonio committed to Vision Zero several years ago, the city has continued to be plagued by vehicular crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians. Efforts to create a modern, equitable, and sustainable multi-modal transportation system in the Alamo City have been stagnant for awhile. Cars dominate the roadway, while curb-tight sidewalks make walking and cycling especially dangerous.
My hope is that this crash map can provide some clarity and context to future discussions regarding Safe Streets and Vision Zero.
